There are as many houses as there are guacamole recipes. Guacamole is a Mexican, four-season sauce based on avocado. Its popularity is due to its simplicity, as it's an easy-to-make, healthy sauce. And because of the neutral taste of avocado, there are countless versions. Which is the perfect one?
A brief history of guacamole
The avocado is native to south-central Mexico, so it's no surprise that guacamole was first made by the Aztecs who lived in the region. The Aztecs were aware that avocados were very healthy so they consumed them a lot and considered them a real aphrodisiac. The word 'avocado' comes from the Aztec word ahuacatl, which the Spaniards later took to be aguacata. Its meaning is testicle. It is not known whether the Aztecs called it this because the avocado hangs from the tree in pairs or whether they were referring to its aphrodisiac nature. The word guacamole, also known as ahuacamolli in Aztec, is derived from an Aztec compound word combining the words avocado and sauce. The guacamole recipe at the time consisted of avocado and various spices. It became a popular dish in Spain in the 1500s. The fruit, which was introduced during the various conquests, was so popular with the Spanish that large quantities were imported into the country. Later, avocado trees were planted.
Guacamole is enjoying its golden age in the 21st century. Although the dish was known and popular long before, due to various restrictions, avocados were either not available in the 20th century or only very expensive. In the United States, for example, the import of Mexican avocados was banned from 1910 until 1997. In the 21st century, the tables are turned, and guacamole is a regular in almost every household.
The diversity of guacamole
The original guacamole, as we have written, contained avocado and various spices. The most popular recipes include avocado, lime, tomato, coriander, cilantro, red onion, salt and pepper. Some have improved on this base by adding sour cream, garlic, mayonnaise and other herbs. The sky's the limit for ingredients. Quick to make, versatile, delicious and healthy, it's no wonder so many people love it.
Guacamole is a great choice for gatherings of friends and family, or when you don't have time to cook. Many people serve it with nachos, but it's also delicious on toast. It's an easy way to dress up a simple sandwich, but it's also great as a snack. It's also great for dieters, thanks to the avocado, it's packed with healthy fats and vitamins.
