Plant-based for our common future!

David White Castle

In the past, a vegetarian, vegan, plant-based lifestyle was a lifestyle of choice for only a few people, because of some conviction. It was mainly activists, a small minority of people who identified with this lifestyle.

A diet that avoids animal products is now very common. In addition to celebrities, large corporations and mammoth companies have embraced the values of the vegetarian/vegan philosophy.

A plant-based diet has many benefits. These are not limited to the positive effects on our health, but are also very tangible on a much larger scale, in terms of their impact on the environment. In recent years, a number of studies have shown that the production of animal products such as meat, milk and eggs has a significant environmental impact.

Compared with the production of plant-based products, animal-based products use much more drinking water, have a greater negative impact on soil and produce more greenhouse gas emissions. To give an example, if we compare the most sustainable way of rearing cattle with the way green peas are grown for non-feed, we find that animal production uses 36 times more land and emits six times more greenhouse gases than crop production.

It is important that the solution starts at the level of ordinary people. Consumption habits have the power to shape food trends, so you have the opportunity to drive global change. And the good news is that it's not small: a plant-based diet can make a much bigger positive difference than driving an electric car or reducing the number of flights you take, because all you're doing is affecting greenhouse gas emissions. And your health will be grateful too, so it's a win-win!

Don't think about radical steps at first, start small: start with a few plant-based meals a week and increase them at your own pace! It's not a sprint, it's a marathon, where the goal is nothing less than our future together and a brave new world. J
